Today I had a lesson in the power of trust. Well actually it was a riding lesson, but I learnt a great deal about trust.
For no particular reason my anxiety levels were extremely high. I was catastrophising about everything, even though my horse wasn’t. This is not a particularly good situation with an animal who can hear and feel body tension, rapid breathing and a raised heartbeat. I could very easily have given up. But trust got me though.
Trust in my coach who guided me through every movement; helped me with breathing techniques; and whom I know would only ask of me and Allie what she knows we can deliver.
Trust in the partnership with my horse, Allie, who always looks after me and never does anything I can’t cope with. He reads me and delivers at the level I need him to.
And finally, trust in my own abilities. I know I am a good rider with many years of experience and expertise. I needed to trust that I could deal with anything that was likely to happen. It didn’t, and we finished with some very positive riding.
It then occurred to me how much trust is as vital in the business world. Trust in our coaches to give the right advice and support, trust in our employees and partnerships to deliver the service they have committed to, and a trust even in our clients, that they also meet their obligations against any agreement or contract. Without trust there would be no value.
